The Biggest Mistake You're Making on Social
Small teams and solopreneurs are making the biggest mistake on social media: Too Many Platforms!
I have fallen victim to this myself. When I first launched my NBA Content channel, I was focused on being everywhere…but what happens when you try to be EVERYWHERE for EVERYONE…you end up being NOWHERE for NOBODY!
So there I was, fully optimized and pumping out content on X back when it was still called Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, Twitch, and a few other less popular platforms. As I pushed through and tried to grow, I felt like I was on the proverbial hamster wheel. Have you been there? Making content for the sake of making content?
It wasn't until I audited my time that I realized I didn’t have the bandwidth to be on all platforms. So, I trimmed the fat. I did a deep dive into the data and found that Snapchat, LinkedIn, Twitch, and Facebook weren't really building any traction.
Instagram was kind of in the middle, but YouTube and TikTok were crushing it. One video hit a half million views on TikTok, and two of our YouTube shorts hit over 2 million views. Both channels were growing fast, with meteoric follower growth.
So, instead of trying to bring the other platforms along for the ride by repurposing the same content there, I completely leaned into TikTok and YouTube. I poured gas on it. So, the bandwidth I would have used for all seven of the platforms, I concentrated those efforts on 2 platforms.
Once TikTok and YouTube were stable and under control, I moved on to Instagram.
My audience is different from yours (unless you're in the hyper-niched fantasy basketball space) so you need to find out where your people hang out on social media. If you need some ideas on how to do this, just reply "I NEED ANSWERS.”
